Well, "dynamics" just means the difference between louder and softer parts, and with higher volume, you indeed can get higher differences. It might actually be possible that these gain settings (when they first appeared for the ST) were intended to prevent unhealthily loud output levels, depending on the headphones type. (When we take the loudest setting as the base, the other settings just limit the output level.) Or it's just marketing.
