This is because the .asoundrc applies it to both playback and capture.

Try this instead:

pcm.!default {
  type asym
  playback.pcm {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "softvol"
  }
  capture.pcm {
    type plug
    slave.pcm "hw:0"  # or whatever
  }
}

To prevent the mixer from showing it as a capture control, name
it "Master Playback Volume" instead.
