The built-in driver should work with any class-compliant USB audio
device.

Is this card actually at index 1?  (see /proc/asound/cards)

Replace this with the following:

  defaults.pcm.card "soundcard"
  defaults.ctl.card "soundcard"

This might be a side effect of too much CPU usage due to the software
mixer.  Try disabling it:

  cards.USB-Audio.pcm.use_dmix."soundcard" no
