Do you have the rights to access /dev/snd/control*?

(Typically, your user must be added to the audio group.)

A HDA sound system consists of two parts, the HDA controller and the
HDA codec.

That's likely; see /proc/asound/cards.

You should do this only if you kernel is older than that driver, and
even then, it would be a better idea to update the kernel.
