Yes, but the "reference" device did not use the "plug" plugin, which was in the "default" device, which did not have the card parameter.

Try something like this:

pcm.reference {
	@args [ CARD ]
	@args.CARD {
		type string
		default 0
	}
	type plug
	slave.pcm {
		type softvol
		slave.pcm {
			type hw
			card $CARD
			subdevice 0
		}
		control {
			name "Reference"
			card $CARD
		}
	}
}
