Thanks for the insight!

Apparently, I found out that alsamixergui contained a setting for the
"Speakers" which was lower than it should have been, and after I increased it,
the volume became much better and acceptable. Then I found out how to add it
to KDE's KMix mixer.

Now everything is fine, and peace has prevailed upon the land.
