Well running aplay as non root works (ie does not crash) (but no sound
and really strange behaviour as I explained earlier)

As root I see this:

$ sudo aplay -vv sound.wav
Home directory not accessible: Permission denied
ALSA lib pcm_dmix.c:1018:(snd_pcm_dmix_open) unable to open slave
aplay: main:682: audio open error: No such file or directory

I've no idea if this is a clue

Only the message I saw earlier when I ran alsa-info.sh

[ 4.160206] init: Failed to spawn hybrid-gfx main process: unable
to execute: No such file or directory

What this message means is a mystery toi me

Having googled a lot the only (linux) OS where the DC3117IYE sound works
is Arch linux - and this seems to be due to some kernel patches (unclear which)
