Hi list, My name is Funs Seelen and I've been using alsa for a couple of years now. I've never had any problem with alsa and my sound card (UA25-EX) until I bought a new desktop computer, two months ago. I installed Debian Squeeze and couldn't get the sound working for Jack and Pure Data. The error message: `ALSA: could not start playback (Broken pipe) DRIVER NT: could not start driver'. Of course i tried to figure out what the problem was, spent many hours editing configuration files, googling, reading, trying, learning, updated the driver. About two weeks ago I finally got sound with Pd and Jack, setting the `advanced driver' of my card to `off' (fixed to 44100 Hz, 16-bit). This luck only lasted until the next boot. I then gave up on Debian. My sound card had always worked correctly under Ubuntu 10.04, so I decided to do a fresh installation. However, i had no luck this time, so it's seems to have something to do with my hardware setup. Two remarks about the hardware: - No internal sound card. The usb (UA25-EX) is the only sound card connected/configured. Changing this to card 0 is not the solution. - Operating system is installed on an SSD. I have moved my home directory to an internal hdd. OS boots quickly. `$ aplay mysoundfile.wav' works under ubuntu. Pulseaudio is installed, but before (on Debian) I had no luck either (without pulseaudio aplay complains about the bitrate, unless the `-D plughw' option is used). Sound for browser apps works thanks to pulseaudio, speaker-test works, rhythmbox works, just not Jack and Pd (Pd's `configure' reports ALSA no, Jack no). This is my current alsa-info output: http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=95c79f9d13d648f4e1b5b64c0852a5882cbd9d4a One difference I noticed between my old Ubuntu netbook and my brand new desktop is that the latter shows no controls for the UA25EX (in alsa-info nor alsamixer). state.UA25EX { control { } } Now, after two months of research without satisfying result I post my problem to this list hoping that some of you could point me to a possible solution. Please tell me if you need more information to be able to help me.
