Thank you for clearing that up for me.  I thought if the chip was 
supported, the manufacturer didn't make much difference.  Now I know better.

rmmod snd_ice1724 followed by modprobe snd_ice1724 restored sound. I had 
to log out of my graphical session and use a tty session (e.g. 
ctl-alt-F1) for this in order for the driver to be not be in use, but it 
worked.

Obviously that's a valuable workaround.  What does it tell us about 
avoiding the problem altogether?
