I have installed a fresh 12.04 Ubuntu. Originally I didnot get any sound via the HDMI cable. In the audio config menu no HDMI mentioned. I then installed two things: the actual fglrx drivers from AMD and the freshest 3.6.6 kernel and both things together helped to get audio from the computer via hdmi to the monitor. This might also interest others.
