Hi Clemens,
coming back to this issue. I have installed a fresh 12.04 Ubuntu.
Originally I didnot get any sound via the HDMI cable. In the audio
config menu no HDMI mentioned.

I then installed two things: the actual fglrx drivers from AMD and the
freshest 3.6.6 kernel and both things together helped to get audio from
the computer via hdmi to the monitor.

This might also interest others.
