I'd have to check to see which specific model the receiver is, it can't be more than a couple years old though. I don't think pulseaudio is the problem. If I use pasuspender to run things like speaker-test direct to ALSA, I get even *worse* results--I can't even run speaker-test with 6 channels, I can only use 2. At least with pulseaudio I can use 6 channels, even though they're not quite the correct ones. I was on irc.freenode.net #pulseaudio for quite a while diagnosing this problem, and I'm pretty confident that they adequately established that pulseaudio is not at fault. I'm happy to collect further data, but I'm not really sure where to start!
