No sound on Creative PCI-e...

Hello all, I'm hoping that someone can help me here, and a few others along
the line as well. I see that looking from the supported sound cards list that
my Creative Labs X-Fi Fatal1ty PCI-e 20k2 is not supported. However, in the
past, specifically with Ubuntu 9.04 64-bit, I had sound working with the help
of the people at http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=870001 . In 9.10, I
couldn't get the sound to work, but in Ubuntu 10.04 32-bit (not the 64-bit
version, don't know why, I do have an AMD 64-bit proc...), I was able to get
sound again, but not since with one exception. If I did an upgrade over the
Internet to 10.10 32-bit vs. a clean install, I was able to use the old kernel
left behind from the 10.04 install to get sound on 10.10. However, if I did a
clean install, or try the newer kernel that came with 10.10, I had no luck.

So, my question, I guess, becomes this: How was I and still able to get sound
from my PCI-e card in Ubuntu 10.04 with kernel 2.6.32-xx and in 10.10 with the
same kernel? What changed since then? I am currently back to running Ubuntu
10.04 and the latest ALSA drivers. If anyone can help, or point me in the
direction of how to get this problem resolved, I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

J.O.
