The 'trick' to avoiding problems with the device numbering changing is
to use "M2496" instead of "0" or "1", i.e. hw:M2496.

ICE1712 cards only accept one sample format, and also only 10 channel
output / 12 channel input (yes, no simple 2 channel stereo, really), so
for most purposes you will have to use default:M2496 or plughw:M2496.

spdif:M2496 should work on these, but probably not if anything else is
accessing the rest of device at the same time. On an M2496, s/pdif is on
channels 9/10 of the 10 channel output and 12 channel input (channels
11/12 on the input are monitors of the output), which is quite useful
for JACK; less so for simple programs that assume stereo...
