I'd like to ask you a few questions to help me establish in my own mind how
you have proceeded so far.

Firstly, have you tried using the 'aplay -D hw:N,M' command followed by the
name of an LPCM wave file and tried various values to see if any choice of
N and M produce sound?

e.g. does something like 'aplay -D hw:0,0 <wavefilename here> do nothing,
or does it give an error, or... ?

Secondly, did you obtain the above results from a specific command or prog?
if so, what?

Thirdly, have you tried adding a simple section to your .asoundrc file to
explicitly define which card and device and the 'default' along with some
basic settings? e.g. I use

pcm.!default {
type plug
slave {
pcm "hw:1"
channels 2
format S24_3LE
}
}

in my .asoundrc to specify that a specific device the system identifies as
hw:1 (and which expects the S24_3LE format) is to be used as default. Have
you tried that with various values for the "hw:", starting either with no
other entries for things like 'format' and then experimented on the basis
of the info you have?

I can't immediately diagnose your problem as I don't yet know enough.
Someone else may be able to do so! But replies to the above may help.

Afraid I am myself a learner, no expert on ALSA. But when I asked for help
here myself I noticed the tendency of others to simply say "use jack" or
"use pulse" or similar. Which to me seems not to help much if - like myself
- you actually want to understand and diagnose the problem, and have posted
on an ALSA list because you want to do this using ALSA! :-)

Slainte,

Jim
