That's a pity! I thought someone came up with some advice.
But at least we could compare our observations.

Are you saying that in your case Mic never worked?

I tend to think that there might be separate problems I see in oS 11.1
and in 11.3.
In both systems I had Mic working fine for quite some time.

Now in 11.1 it looks like "Controls" somehow mixed up (Line In moved
to Front Mic and Front Mic - not sure where to). That is when I change
settings of Front Mic it actually influence Line In. And Mic is just
muted.
I did alsaconfig and then tried alsamixer - no luck.

In 11.3 I worked with 2 (now 3) different kernel versions, all with
alsa 1.0.23 and the behavior is the same.
All my sound worked on 11.3 out of the box. Now the Mic seems working
(I hear Mic audio in speaker and headphones) but can't record from Mic
(level is 0) and can't use it in Skype - no audio.
Yesterday I also noticed that if I'm trying alsaconfig on 11.3,
alsaconfig does not find any sound card (even when I use run level 3).
