no sound over S/PDIF optical out, HDMI audio working

Hi all. I just recently got to testing this, and have no idea why I am not
getting sound via my optical output when plugged into a set of Logitech Z680
speakers. My specs are as follows: kernel 2.6.33, Alsa-driver-1.0.21, Alc888
chip as displayed by aplay -l:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC888 Analog [ALC888 Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC888 Digital [ALC888 Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
To get the alc888 digital output subdevice to show up on this Clevo W860CU
laptop, I have to pass something like model=3stack-dig to snd_hda_intel. All the
IEC-relevant Amixer controls are unmuted, as shown here:
Simple mixer control 'IEC958',0
  Capabilities: pswitch pswitch-joined cswitch cswitch-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Capture channels: Mono
  Mono: Playback [on] Capture [on]
Simple mixer control 'IEC958 Default PCM',0
  Capabilities: pswitch pswitch-joined
  Playback channels: Mono
  Mono: Playback [on]

As I mentioned in the subject line, output via the Alc888 digital subdevice
works fine via the HDMI port i.e., when connected to a TV and the video output
is switched to an external display via Fn+F7 on this particular machine. Is
there any reason given my configuration, as to why I shouldn't be able to simply
hook up the Z680 to the S/PDIF jack via an standard Toslink to mini Toslink
adapter, have MPlayer dump audio to the digital subdevice, and hear sound coming
out of the speakers? Perhaps I need to somehow tell the driver that audio should
be routed out the S/PDIF jack instead of the HDMI port? I have not been able to
entirely rule out a bad physical connection i.e., bad connection to the S/PDIF
jack from the mini toslink adapter, broken optical cable, non-functioning
optical input on the Z680, etc. Unfortunately, I don't have any other devices
here that I can test with, so attempting to rule out the above possibilities is
not going to be very possible. OR, perhaps I am missing something else entirely
with my above sound configuration? Thanks in advance!
