i/o error when doing cat /dev/dsp

Hi,

When my program is trying to access /dev/dsp (read access), or even cat
/dev/dsp, I get after a few seconds (in which nothing happens) an
Input/Output error.
I tried the suggestions from the wiki with /proc/asound/card0/pcm0c/oss
but that didn't help.

Versions of the alsa packages:
timelord:/etc/default# dpkg --list | grep alsa
ii alsa-base 1.0.23+dfsg-1
ii alsa-utils 1.0.23-2

kernel version: 2.6.32-trunk-686

Anyone got a suggestion how to fix this?
