after fooling around with the settings in vlc and alsamixer I had success:
I had to choose the device:
SB Live 5.1 [SB0060]: Multichannel Capture/PT Playback (hw:1,2)
and turn on (!!!)
S/PDIF Optical Raw
Now the external amplifier indicates a Dolby Digital multichannel signal (indeed it is a Dolby Digital 5.1/ ac3)
The last one surprises me because I have connected the soundcard to a coaxial input, not an optical. And how is vlc aware of the various devices?

I have a similar problem with soundblaster 5.1 live.
Choosing "stereo" as output mode in, eg. mplayer or vlc, gives me a working digital signal. But when I choose to pass through an ac3 5.1 -signal, I get only noise using vlc. (s)mplayer crashes saying this:
Selected audio code: [hwac3]afm: hwac3 (AC3 through S/PDIF)
[format] Sample format big endian AC3 not yet supported
Is AC3-pass through supposed to work at all with the emu10k1-chip?
