Yes, when it's said "cp /downloads/alsa-* .", it means "copy the
downloaded alsa tarball into /usr/src/alsa".

The autoconf.h file must be present if you have the right headers. In
most distributions, they are available one way or another (like
linux-headers under Ubuntu).

Yes, you can't compile correctly if the configure script was not
executed with no errors.
