Thank you so much.  It will be done.  I clearly installed a kernel package
that I shouldn't have, and then took a driver from the nvidia site.  I see
my mistake now.  I will install another kernel and the nvidia module package 
from the dist. instead, and with any luck at all alsa will be in one or both 
of them., bug-free.  Regards, daveA
