/usr/sbin/alsactl: set_control:1266: failed to obtain info for control #9 (No such file or directory)

I have an AMD/ATI SBx00 hda intel  Azalia type chip (It's a chunk somewhere in the amd sb600 southbridge).  In pci id terms, this is  1002:4383; Alsa insists, however that I have a 11d4:1981, i.e an Analog Devices AD1981:-/. When I encourage alsa to think (remove asound.state & reboot, or this time symlinking the module that is usually loading (snd-hda-codec-analog) to the one that should be (snd-hda-codec-atihdmi) I get a string of errors like the above which are not logged. It complains about icontrols  #5-11 at least - it could be more, but they scroll off the page _fast_.  The box is an all-AMD/ATI  HP6715S with RS690 & SB600

Any suggestions on how to faultfind?
