It does work, but only as the default device or plughw.  It does not
work and produces the above error as hw.

# cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [USBDAC         ]: USB-Audio - Proton USBDAC
                      Wavelength Audio,ltd Proton USBDAC at
usb-0000:00:04.0-1, full speed
