Cut to the chase.
In /usr/src/linux*/Documentation/sound/alsa there are 2 docs of interest. One is HD-Audio.txt giving the various options. I decided to start with correcting my model. (Mine is amd/ati but identifies as Analog devices)
HD-Audio-Models.txt gives the parameters for the model option. The syntax would be
options snd-hda-intel model="your_model"
