Any help on this would be appreciated. I have an older hp laptop that suddenly, after the install of Ubuntu Karmic (this laptop has been running Ubuntu for several editions except for Jaunty - skipped that one for some reason), lost its sound functionality.
Well, to be precise, the problem is the mic. Everything else works. When I try to record or use Skype - which we always used to use - it sounds like the mic is registering the sound twice, and putting it back out, so that it sounds like a skipping record. You hear everything you say twice but in little short stutters. Not sure what the problem is, or what to do about it. Can someone please let me know how to go about diagnosing this. Alsamixer doesn't seem to show anything strange, except that a couple sliders don't respond - not anything that seems to matter. Mic and Capture slides all respond.
