Hi all. I have done some additional looking into this, and have since figured
out two things. First, NVidia uses S/PDIF passthru for most of their HDMI
audio output. Consequently, this has led me to determine that my S/PDIF output
was not working via the autoprobing method, although I did get a digital
subdevice if I specified model=3stack-dig:
**** List of PLAYBACK Hardware Devices ****
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 0: ALC888 Analog [ALC888 Analog]
  Subdevices: 0/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 1: ALC888 Digital [ALC888 Digital]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0
card 0: Intel [HDA Intel], device 6: Si3054 Modem [Si3054 Modem]
  Subdevices: 1/1
  Subdevice #0: subdevice #0

ANd here is relevant aplay -L:
iec958:CARD=Intel,DEV=0
    HDA Intel, ALC888 Digital
    IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output

The only problem with passing model=3stack-dig, is that in doing so my headphone
output seases to work. The only workaround I have found thus far is to load
snd_hda_intel with no parameters when wanting to use the internal speakers and
analog headphones, and model=3stack-dig when wanting to use S/PDIF and HDMI
audio output. The main reason for this workaround, is that the headphone switch
in Amixer does not work; running amixer set 'Headphone' unmute has no effect.

I am currently using a 2.6.31.5 kernel, and the in-kernel Alsa-1.0.20. Has
anyone had differing success with the Alsa-1.0.21 driver? Thanks.
