No sounds through laptop speakers and no 'mono' track to unmute

afternoon,

I have just compiled and installed the latest version of ALSA. I have a Sony UX1XN micro-laptop and previously, whenever I have installed ALSA I have had no sound out of the speakers, but have had sound out of the headphones when I connect them. I have previously resolved this by un-muting the 'mono' track.

I open the volume control, select edit>prefs, select 'mono' and then unmute.

This time I have no 'mono' in the list. I get audio through headphones, but not through the onboard speaker.

I compiled:
alsa-driver-1.0.21
alsa-lib-1.0.21a
alsa-oss-1.0.17
alsa-utils-1.0.21

How do I unmute 'mono' in the latest version of ALSA, or am I being really dumb?

Many thanks in advance.

Dan
