Solving my own problem here: Apparently my usb hub does not work as well under 
linux as it does under windows. I noticed many messages in dmesg like :

cannot submit datapipe for urb 0, error -28: not enough bandwidth
ehci_hcd 0000:00:1d.7: iso sched full ffff880080467080 (now 6804 max 14996)


once i connected the headset to another port, everything starts working.
