choppy sound with HDMI output

Hi,

Using kernel 2.6.31 on a debian 'testing' laptop I get choppy sound
through the HDMI port to a LCD TV set. It doesn't seem to be a bandwidth
issue as the sound is halting or choppy even when only playing music
(no video) and I use a 1.3a cable. When playing a movie the sound is
still choppy but the movie is fluid.

The sound is otherwise fine on this Dell XPS 1330 laptop.

Here is the device:

00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 02)
    Subsystem: Dell Device 0209
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 21
    Memory at f6ffc000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: [50] Power Management version 2
    Capabilities: [60] MSI: Enable- Count=1/1 Maskable- 64bit+
Capabilities: [70] Express Root Complex Integrated Endpoint, MSI 00
    Capabilities: [100] Virtual Channel <?>
Capabilities: [130] Root Complex Link <?>
Kernel driver in use: HDA Intel

My alsa version is 1.0.21.

Any idea where to look?

Thanks,
