Hi I am a total novice so I'd better start with the apology - sorry for missing info or stupid questions. I have had Debian (etch) running on an old Gateway Pentium for a couple of years. I've only learnt about linux when I've had to and generally it has all been great. I now have a new Advent QC6003 with Intel Quad Q8200 CPU and IDT 92HD73E HD Audio Codec sound card. Sound works fine in windows. I have installed Debian Lenny and it looks great but I can't get sound to work. I can use alsamixer in a terminal and use GNOME Alsa Mixer and have checked that the mute switches are off. I have searched online and on these lists but been unable to find anyone with the same problem or with a solution. lspci gives 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset DRAM Controller (rev 03) 00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) 00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 03) 00:03.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset HECI Controller (rev 03) 00:03.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset PT IDER Controller (rev 03) 00:03.3 Serial controller: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset Serial KT Controller (rev 03) 00:19.0 Ethernet controller: Intel Corporation 82567LF-2 Gigabit Network Connection 00:1a.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) USB UHCI Controller #4 00:1a.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) USB UHCI Controller #5 00:1a.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) USB UHCI Controller #6 00:1a.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #2 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) USB UHCI Controller #1 00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) USB UHCI Controller #2 00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) USB UHCI Controller #3 00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #1 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 PCI Bridge (rev 90) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801JIR (ICH10R) LPC Interface Controller 00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) 4 port SATA IDE Controller 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) SMBus Controller 00:1f.5 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801JI (ICH10 Family) 2 port SATA IDE Controller 01:01.0 FireWire (IEEE 1394): Agere Systems FW323 (rev 70) alsa-info output is at www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=cde6f8bf1c0388827c171edcfa22c21f7f78850a aadebug output is: ALSA Audio Debug v0.1.0 - Wed Sep 9 20:27:03 BST 2009 http://alsa.opensrc.org/aadebug http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.txt Kernel ---------------------------------------------------- Linux huwbian 2.6.26-2-amd64 #1 SMP Wed Aug 19 22:33:18 UTC 2009 x86_64 GNU/Linux Loaded Modules -------------------------------------------- snd_seq_dummy 7428 0 snd_hda_intel 436696 1 snd_pcm 81800 1 snd_hda_intel snd_seq 54304 1 snd_seq_dummy snd_timer 25744 2 snd_pcm,snd_seq snd_seq_device 11668 2 snd_seq_dummy,snd_seq snd 63688 7 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm,snd_seq,snd_timer,snd_seq_device snd_page_alloc 13072 2 snd_hda_intel,snd_pcm Modprobe Conf --------------------------------------------- Warning: module config file does not exist This means any kernel modules will not be auto loaded See your linux distro docs on how to create this file Proc Asound ----------------------------------------------- Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version 1.0.16. 0 [Intel ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel HDA Intel at 0xff620000 irq 22 0: [ 0] : control 1: : sequencer 16: [ 0- 0]: digital audio playback 17: [ 0- 1]: digital audio playback 24: [ 0- 0]: digital audio capture 33: : timer cat: /proc/asound/hwdep: No such file or directory 00-01: STAC92xx Digital : STAC92xx Digital : playback 1 00-00: STAC92xx Analog : STAC92xx Analog : playback 1 : capture 2 Client info cur clients : 2 peak clients : 2 max clients : 192 Client 0 : "System" [Kernel] Port 0 : "Timer" (Rwe-) Port 1 : "Announce" (R-e-) Client 14 : "Midi Through" [Kernel] Port 0 : "Midi Through Port-0" (RWe-) Dev Snd --------------------------------------------------- controlC0 pcmC0D0c pcmC0D0p pcmC0D1p seq timer CPU ------------------------------------------------------- model name : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz cpu MHz : 1998.000 model name : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz cpu MHz : 1998.000 model name : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz cpu MHz : 1998.000 model name : Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q8200 @ 2.33GHz cpu MHz : 1998.000 RAM ------------------------------------------------------- MemTotal: 6030588 kB SwapTotal: 11044648 kB Hardware -------------------------------------------------- 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation 4 Series Chipset DRAM Controller (rev 03) I think the problem is here: Modprobe Conf --------------------------------------------- Warning: module config file does not exist This means any kernel modules will not be auto loaded See your linux distro docs on how to create this file I have no etc/modprobe.conf file.
