Run:

% amixer | less

Here is a snippet from my Dell Inspiron:

Simple mixer control 'Input Source',0
  Capabilities: cenum
  Items: 'Mic' 'Front Mic'
  Item0: 'Mic'
Simple mixer control 'Input Source',1
  Capabilities: cenum
  Items: 'Mic' 'Front Mic'
  Item0: 'Mic'

'Front Mic' is the built-in mic and 'Mic' is the external, for me.

So for me to record on my built-in:

% amixer sset 'Capture' cap
% amixer sset 'Input Source',0 'Front Mic'
% amixer sset 'Input Source',1 'Front Mic'
