Hi guys This is my first message in a mailing list ever and as you may see from this fact, I'm a Linux noob. I have posted my problem here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=7700857#post7700857 But after I didn't get a lot of help I'm wiriting this message now. I have searched the internet for some days and hope to get help on this way... I worked with Ubuntu on my laptop for some years now and have built a HTPC. My system: Mainboard M4N72-E with onboard VIA VT1708S soundchip. Operating System is Mythbuntu 9.04 AMD64. Kernel 2.6.28-14-generic ALSA Version 1.0.20 I want to get the sound to my 5.1 system over SPDIF. It worked occasionally but not reproducible. To solve the problem I have followed this: http://www.mythtv.org/wiki/AllensDigitalAudioHowto aplay -l: card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 0: VT1708S Analog [VT1708S Analog] Subdevices: 2/2 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 Subdevice #1: subdevice #1 card 0: NVidia [HDA NVidia], device 1: VT1708S Digital [VT1708S Digital] Subdevices: 2/2 Subdevice #0: subdevice #0 Subdevice #1: subdevice #1 aplay -L: front:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0 HDA NVidia, VT1708S Analog Front speakers surround40:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0 HDA NVidia, VT1708S Analog 4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers surround41:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0 HDA NVidia, VT1708S Analog 4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers surround50:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0 HDA NVidia, VT1708S Analog 5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers surround51:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0 HDA NVidia, VT1708S Analog 5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers surround71:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0 HDA NVidia, VT1708S Analog 7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers iec958:CARD=NVidia,DEV=0 HDA NVidia, VT1708S Digital IEC958 (S/PDIF) Digital Audio Output null Discard all samples (playback) or generate zero samples (capture) In alsamixer I have turned each volume up and checked three IEC958 boxes. This is the content in my "/etc/asound.conf": pcm.!default { type plug slave { pcm "hw:0,1" format S32_LE } } It worked with it two or three times but at the latest after rebooting it didn't work anymore. Is this a known problem of the soundchip or is the problem sitting behind the screen?
