problem with USB microphone

I use a VXI microphone (shown above) for speech recognition.  For a variety of
reasons, USB pass-through to a virtual machine gobbles audio and I wanted to
experiment with using pulse audio to feed audio to the virtual machine.  I spent
a good deal of time with some very nice people on pulse audios IRC channel and
the microphone just wasn't visible to any of the pulse audio devices.  When you
bring up a mixer, the only audio device that shows is the built-in sound system
(HDA Intel).  After a significant debugging attempt, they thought it was an ALSA
problem and suggested I come to this mailing list to ask for help.
