I actually agree with you that a dedicated device would be preferable for this application. But the original post was asking about software that could be used to better record the lectures. For some sound recording, I use a solid state recorder then edit with Audacity. A lot of things can go wrong with recording on a computer. You need to insure only one source is recorded, which Audacity does, but some recorders just record the "mixer".
