sound sticks in tight loop with Intel audio ICH7

Sound works for awhile for me, and then it gets stuck on some sound and
plays it over and over.  When I quit firefox the sound stops (though it
often continues 30-60 seconds after shutdown).  Then when I start up
firefox again, the sound is fine.  In the busted state, often there is
no sound for awhile (c 30-60 seconds), then some distorted scraps, and
the the looping effect.  This "broken from the start" occurs most
commonly if I've left the browser up for awhile (like a day) and then
try to use sound.

I do not know where in the stack the problem lies; it might be in, e.g.,
the plugin or firefox rather than alsa.  Most recently I've been running
into this playing shows at hulu.com; They say they use flash.  I'm
running Debian Lenny with the Marillat AV additions.

I'm running under KDE.

I tried setting 
	options snd_hda_intel position_fix=1
as suggested in
http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Help_To_Debug_Intel_HDA.
It didn't help.
