question about ice1712

Hi everyone, sorry for bothering.

My system kernel is 2.6.29 and using ALSA 1.0.19.

I am using an m-audio 2496 sound card(ICE1712) and it works fine under ALSA
except for one issue: It seems that I met problems with PCM very often. For
example when I tryed to run virtualbox with "ALSA Audio Driver" as its
"Host Audio Driver", I got no sound in the guest OS. I read the log of
VirtualBox and found:

00:00:00.837 Audio: Trying driver 'alsa'.
00:00:00.837 Audio: set_record_source ars=0 als=0 (not implemented)
00:00:00.848 ALSA: Failed to apply audio parameters
00:00:00.863 ALSA: Failed to apply audio parameters
00:00:00.878 ALSA: Failed to apply audio parameters
00:00:00.893 ALSA: Failed to apply audio parameters
00:00:00.908 ALSA: Failed to apply audio parameters
00:00:00.923 ALSA: Failed to apply audio parameters
00:00:00.929 AC97: WARNING: Unable to open PCM IN!
00:00:00.929 AC97: WARNING: Unable to open PCM MC!
00:00:00.929 AC97: WARNING: Unable to open PCM OUT!
00:00:00.929 Audio: Using NULL audio driver

And similarly when I was trying to run gmplayer I got repeating warning
message

[AO_ALSA] Unable to find simple control 'PCM',0.

I tried amixer | grep -B1 pvolume and got

Simple mixer control 'Multi',0
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch
--
Simple mixer control 'Multi',1
  Capabilities: pvolume pswitch
....

I am not familiar with PCM and in fact I even do not know what it exactly is.
But I guess my card is not using PCM but Multi as some kind of controller.
I just do not know what I am supposed to do with these issues. I found many
suggested configuration in .asoundrc from wiki-alsa. But none of them
works for me.

For gmplayer I can require it to use Multi,0 as mixer channel but I do
no know what I should
do with virtualbox.....

I wish someone can help me with this issue :) Thank you very much.

Peng
