asoundrc Output to HDMI by default

Hello all,

In attempting to get my soundcard working as expected (all
output via hdmi) (hw:0,3) by default, I've encountered a
bit of difficulty. Hoping someone familiar with asoundrc
is able to give me some pointers.

I simply tried putting the following in /etc/asound.conf
defaults.pcm.device 3

That does result in most audio going to the hdmi port but
in the case of ac3 passthru which can also route via hdmi,
things complain that there is no iec958 subdevice. Without
the defaults.pcm.device line, iec958 does exist but is
mapped to the spdif port (hw:0,1), how can I fix this.

Also, using this method seems to limit the sampling rate
out pcm.default to 48khz and I don't know why, though it
does support multiple streams. If on mplayer I use -ao
alsa:device=hw=0.3 or plughw, I get the 96khz sampling rate
of the track.

I'm guessing alsa needs to decide on a sampling rate from
the get-go in the event multiple streams need playing but
since this machine doesn't use multiple streams, is there
any way to turn off downsampling from 96khz or 192khz. I
do need upsampling for streams < 44khz though as the hdmi
port will have none of that.

Shane
