Just as an update, I tested timidity in server mode. It shows up under 'aconnect -lo', but I get no music through it either if I try to play to it with aplaymidi. If I use timidity by itself on the command line it works. So it seems that whatever the problem is it is in the sequencer subsystem in alsalib or in the kernel drivers that prevents any midi device from working. Are there any commands I can run to help debug what is going on here? I'd like to get this fixed, since timidity is a poor alternative, and a CPU hog.
