Here is the difference in output of arecord for onboard sound vs webcam sound:

$ arecord --device=default:CARD=NVidia test
Recording WAVE 'test' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 8000 Hz, Mono
^CAborted by signal Interrupt...

$ arecord --device=default:CARD=Webcam test
ALSA lib pcm_direct.c:866:(snd1_pcm_direct_initialize_slave)
snd_pcm_hw_params_any failed
ALSA lib pcm_dsnoop.c:604:(snd_pcm_dsnoop_open) unable to initialize slave
arecord: main:590: audio open error: Invalid argument

Happens both as root and normal user, so I don't think it is a
permissions issue.

Thanks,
Paul
