usb headset volume control

Hi,

When using my usb headset's volume control device the main soundcard
mixer is changed. Which is logical as I've configured my window manager
(openbox) to capture multimedia key input and translate it to "amixer"
commands targeted towards the primary mixer.

My question is: at the X level how can one discriminate between input
from the keyboard and the usb headset's volume control?

Or is there another way to do it?

Thanks,
