All modules must be compiled with the same compiler that your kernel was
compiled with. Alsa drivers are modules. 
So did you install a new compiler and then compile either the kernel or
also with that new compiler?

There is nothing wrong with that. You can compile and install alsa after
customizing your kernel.

If you recompile your kernel, you must recompile all modules as well, yes.
Alsa is a set of kernel modules.
