I've done some more testing:
 cat /proc/asound/devices
  0: [ 0] : control
  1: : sequencer
  4: [ 0- 0]: hardware dependent
  6: [ 0- 2]: hardware dependent
  8: [ 0- 0]: raw midi
  9: [ 0- 1]: raw midi
 10: [ 0- 2]: raw midi
 11: [ 0- 3]: raw midi
 16: [ 0- 0]: digital audio playback
 18: [ 0- 2]: digital audio playback
 19: [ 0- 3]: digital audio playback
 20: [ 0- 4]: digital audio playback
 24: [ 0- 0]: digital audio capture
 25: [ 0- 1]: digital audio capture
 26: [ 0- 2]: digital audio capture
 28: [ 0- 4]: digital audio capture
 32: [ 1] : control
 33: : timer
 56: [ 1- 0]: digital audio capture
 57: [ 1- 1]: digital audio capture

so I think one of the following devices must be the right one:
 16: [ 0- 0]: digital audio playback
 18: [ 0- 2]: digital audio playback
 19: [ 0- 3]: digital audio playback
 20: [ 0- 4]: digital audio playback

but when I try:
mplayer some.mp3 -ao alsa:device=hw=0,0
mplayer some.mp3 -ao alsa:device=hw=0,2
mplayer some.mp3 -ao alsa:device=hw=0,3
mplayer some.mp3 -ao alsa:device=hw=0,4

There isn't any sound

mplayer some.mp3 -ao alsa:device=spdif

still works perfect

When I make a .asoundrc file with
 pcm.!default spdif
I am able to use the sound programs, but I can't use more then one program
[AO_ALSA] alsa-lib: setup.c:96:(snd_sctl_install) Cannot lock ctl elem
[AO_ALSA] Unable to set hw-parameters: Device or resource busy

So I'm back where I started :-(
