Why do you have to recompile the kernel if you already have the one compiled with OSS ?

You have to just use the kernel with OSS.

If the card got stuck, forcefully removing and reinstalling its driver might help.
Or reboot in the worst case.

But recompiling the kernel ? I don't get it.
