Re: hda-intel: How to get 'Mix' device? Cannot record playback.

HI All

I find easiest way to record from audio playing on the computer is to use a jack enabled player (e.g. audacious or mplayer with jack output plugin) and a jack enabled recorder (e.g. audacity or Ardour)

Here is the way I do it;

Use qjackctrl to start the jack server
Open Audacious
Select Jack as the output plugin from audacious
Open a new session in ardour
Create a new stereo track (It willbe called Audio1)
Open the Track/Bus Inspector
Disconnect the current inputs to Audio1
On the input sources section on the right there should be a tab for audacious.
Connect the outputs from audacious to the inputs of audio 1  (left and right respectively)
Enable Audio1 for recording by pressing the record button on the channel.
Enable Ardour for recording by pressing the record button on the transport (on the toolbar)
Press play ardour to start recording
Press play on audacious.
Stop Ardour once audacious has completed playing the track

You can do the same for web content but need to make sure that you have audacious setup as your default player.

MPlayer works as a player too, but can be tricky as it creates a new set of jack outputs each time you restart a track.

Well, I'm starting to understand that the set of devices depends on the
card. But.

Sound is being played through ALSA, right? ALSA is software, then I
expect that ALSA can create a virtual channel and redirect output to this
channel. Is it possible? I have yes-feeling, but despite of reading
documentation, I don't know even where to start.

Hard to say. Recording from a microphone somehow works for me, but only
when I connect the microphone at the back side of the computer, and not
when at the front panel.
