I haven't done what you are asking, so this is speculation.  But I don't 
think you
need any more than one card if you use something like jack or 
pulseaudio.  You
would just have 8 players running and their output would be mixed via 
jack or
pulse and sent to the soundcard as a mixed stream.  For that matter, I 
think alsa
by default uses the dmix plugin which will mix streams automatically, so 
should
work for this case.

Perhaps someone who has done this can comment.
