Still get sound with Master or PCM set to zero :(

When either my Master or PCM channel is set to zero, there is still
sound. Is there any way to calibrate the gain levels that alsa is using
for Master=0 and PCM=0?

Here's what the gain range appears to be now for my driver (intel8x0):

Master (0=-43.50dB, 31=3.00dB)
PCM (0=-34.50dB, 31=12.00dB)

I generally have PCM set relatively high, because that seems to create
less hiss than having Master set high. Then I adjust Master. But a lot
of the time, Master=0 is still quite loud. It seems like I have to
fiddle with the Master and PCM levels constantly.
