For this and other reasons, I have rebuilt the system using CentOS
5.1. However, I still don't have a controllable analog audio output.
I have audible audio, I just can't mute or change the volume. I would
appreciate any advice on what I did wrong, didn't do right, didn't do
yet, etc. Here's what I did:

On top of the base CentOS 5.1 install, I added these rpms:
Jan 10 21:37:10 Installed: nvidia-graphics-helpers.i386 0.0.22-23.el5
Jan 10 21:37:11 Installed: nvidia-graphics-devices.noarch 1.0-5.0.el5
Jan 10 21:37:29 Installed:
nvidia-graphics169.07-kmdl-2.6.18-53.el5.i686 1:169.07-94.el5
Jan 10 21:37:41 Installed: nvidia-graphics169.07-libs.i386 1:169.07-94.el5
Jan 10 21:37:42 Installed: yum-plugin-kmdl.noarch 0.7-9.el5
Jan 10 21:37:54 Installed: nvidia-graphics169.07.i386 1:169.07-94.el5
Jan 12 11:03:48 Installed: alsa-kmdl-2.6.18-53.el5.i686 1.0.15-64.el5
Jan 12 11:04:29 Installed: alsa-driver.i386 1.0.15-64.el5

I also modified /etc/modprobe.conf to make the audio lines be as follows:
#
# On-Board Sound Device
alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
options snd-card-0 index=0 position_fix=1 model=3stack
options snd-hda-intel index=0 position_fix=1 model=3stack
remove snd-hda-intel { /usr/sbin/alsactl store 0 >/dev/null 2>&1 || :
; }; /sbin/modprobe -r --ignore-remove snd-hda-intel

However, I still get nowhere with alsamixer. I still have the first
control showing as "Headphon" (yes, the "e" at the end is missing),
and it only has a mute control, no volume control. Following that is
the PCM control with no mute and only a volume slider which follows
the volume changes I can make with system-config-soundcard.
Interestingly enough, the CD control volume slider also tracks the
changes in lockstep. In between the PCM control and the CD control
are five that only have a mute option, "Front", "Front Mi",
"Surround", "Center", and "LFE", followed by Line. Line has both a
mute and volume slider. The aforementioned CD control comes next and
has both a mute and a volume slider. After the CD control, there is a
Mic control with mute and volume slider. The last control showing is
Channel and apparently is used to select the number of audio output
channels to enable. It only offers 2ch and 6ch selections.

Neither the PCM nor the CD slider affect the volume and the CD mute
doesn't mute the audio. Neither does the Headphon mute. OTOH, the
Front mute does mute the audio output.

Any advice welcome.

Craig.
