Well, is install.sh there?

It sounds like you did not run ./configure from the right directory.

Why would you use an rc. That is older than the 1.0.14 release.

It looks to me like you have a version incompatibility. I do know that on
older version of alsa, they did not properly remove the old module files
and this would cause incompatibilities.  I cannot remember off hand whether
it was in the 1.0.14 or 15 that they fixed that. 
Anyway, try to get 1.0.15 working.
