Because most sound cards do not have this a hardware input from the output.
Only a few rare cards do.

There have been many discussions here about how to do this. One was is
using jack. Go over old postings to this discussion-- it comes up about
once a week.


I assume you are trying to capture Skype output or capture DVD output,
since otherwise the file is already on your computer so why would you need
to capture it. Note that you really should tell us what you are trying to
do rather than guessing at a solution and asking us how to impliment that
solution.
