Jonathan:- There is a headphone control, which is on or off. It doesn't work in either mode.
Jonty:- I have a Toshiba laptop (Tecra P5) using an intel hda card, so I'd love to see that howto!

What hardware are you running? I have had this problem with my toshiba
laptop using an intel hda card which I fixed using the howto (which I
can't find to post atm). Post your hardware, then we can see where we'll
get to. (and I'll try and find that link regardless.)
