"Mr policeman, I have no idea what is wrong with him. He walked in here and
I did no monkeying with him except trying to alter his brain with this
icepick."
The alsa software was already installed. Kubuntu comes with alsa already
installed. So when you say "except for trying to install the alsa software"
you are saying that you DID do major brain surgery on your system.

You have changed things. You have tried to change alsa, and what you are
getting is something which is NOT appropriate to your kernel.
Now you could try telling us EXACTLY what you did, or we could all sit here
spinning our wheels trying to figure out what it was you did.
The error messages state that your modules are inappropriate for your kernel.

That may be because you grabbed a precompiled version of alsa from
elsewhere, it may be because you screwed up the compilation of alsa, it may
be because you did not remove all of the old alsa modules from your kernel
before installing the new ones, it may be because you forgot to run depmod
after installing the new modules, or may be something else.
Tell us exactly what you did when you "tried to install alsa".
I agree that sound can be a real pain in the but in Linux ( at least part
of the blame belongs with the manufacturers), and that encourages
experimentation. HOwever when the experiment does not work, which yours has
not, you need to tell us exactly what you did.
